About

Jane and Rod,
2022, at Lake Michigan

The Lessons
The discussion guidelines were developed in response to international students request  for English help outside of the classroom. Informal times of discussion provided opportunity to read, listen, and speak with Americans in a stress free situation with no tests or required attendance.  The format also caused natural friendships to form between students and Americans.  The categories, Bible and Lifestyle, were developed in response to students interests.

ESL friends in Salina

The first lessons were developed in Salina, Kansas with students from Kansas Wesleyan University attending an ESL Cafe at First Covenant Church, starting in 2004.  More Bible lessons and Lifestyle lessons were developed at Kansas State University, from 2009 and continuing at the present time. Students attend the Conversation Cafe, held on Wednesdays from 7-8:30 pm, at various locations on the KSU campus.   Additional lessons are added to the website as they are written and tested.

Previously, Jane, along side of raising five children, worked as a substitute teacher, para educator, and summer youth director.  In her volunteer time, she has taught all age levels in churches, written VBS curriculum, organized and carried out activities from church redecorating projects to living nativities.  She is a certified mediator with the state of Kansas. Her bachelor’s degree is in elementary and religious education.

In her spare time, Jane can be found in her garden, traveling, reading, practicing the piano, and spending time with her husband, Rod, and her 10 grandchildren. She usually has an art project she is thinking about or in the midst of creating.

Her priorities are to love God with all of her heart, soul, mind, and strength and to love those around her by serving them and pointing them to the Savior, Jesus Christ.
